The 51st Annual Reunion July 18-19-20, 2008 9:00 A.M. each day.
|
The Annual Reunion of the Germanna Foundation has been held on the third Sunday of July each year, for half a century. The event which began as a picnic lunch and talks on Sunday, has grown to a full weekend of fun, tours, education, reunion with family and friends, and pride in heritage. All persons descended from any of the settlers of the two Germanna Colonies brought to the frontier by Governor Spotswood, or the later arrivals to Madison, Fauquier, and Culpeper counties and others with an interest in the German Heritage of Colonial Virginia as well as the descendants of Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood, are welcome to become members of the Foundation. We are pleased to have on our Board of Trustees both a descendent of Governor Spotswood, and a retired official of the Government of Kreiss Siegen/Wittgenstein from Siegen, Germany.
The year since the 50th Annual Reunion in 2007 has been busy with the full-time operation of the Germanna Visitor Center and Library. The Memorial Granite Benches and granite paving project has continued this year. We have continued to sell paving stones which will be dedicated this year.
Note:
Each of the scheduled events is described below, including the cost per person to attend, you can pay for the registration, which is required, and the events you would like to attend online or by filling in the order form below and mailing it and your check to The Germanna Foundation.
Registration (Required): Price $10.00 per person.

Registration is required to provide adequate seating, food, and name tags for each person attending. Food can be guaranteed for advance registrations only. Admission tickets will be distributed at the registration tables at The Best Western Culpeper Inn on Friday, at the Germanna Center for Advanced Technology in Culpeper on Saturday, and at Germanna Community College Locust Grove Campus on Sunday.
Once again our Headquarters Hotel is the Best Western in Culpeper. We were lucky to be able to obtain rooms at the Best Western Culpeper (formerly the Holiday Inn) this year, due to the horse show in Culpeper that week. Please reserve immediately by calling 540-825-1253. We also have rooms available at the Days Inn in Culpeper (located next door to the Best Western). Be sure to ask for the Germanna Rate when you call. Phone Number for the Days Inn Culpeper is 540-825-4900. The rates are low and the amenities are great. The Best Western has banquet rooms available for individual family gatherings.
Special educational programs are held on the preceding Friday and Saturday of the Annual Reunion with a variety of events that have included seminars and tours of historic areas associated with the cultural heritage of the Germanna families.
The new Germanna Community College Daniels Technology Center in Culpeper was used for the 2007 Seminars and and proved to be an excellent facility. The auditorium seats 600 with full multimedia capabilities. The dining area seats 300, so there will be no scrambling for a seat at the luncheon. The Kids Kaamp at Salubria was a great success in 2007. This all day supervised activitiy has been specially created by the Reunion committee to allow parents to attend the seminars, while their children enjoy a day of fun and games at Salubria. Everything with and 18th century theme provides the children with a fun learning experience (but don't tell them that!) in a safe and supervised atmosphere. They will explore the 18th Century mansion, learn 18th century games and crafts, make their own toys, and enjoy great snacks and lunch. They will even learn how to make their own butter for their afternoon snack time.
Our new caterer, Ted Visikides did a great job last year. He promises marvelous food and plenty of it for all our events again this year.
This year, back by popular demand, is the Vendor's Hall. This room will allow vendors of Genealogical and Historical Materials to display and sell their wares to the attendees. Special thanks to Joan Messing for her tireless effortsfor taking over the responsibility of setting up the Vendor Program for the future.
The programs for Sunday, July 20 will be held at Germanna Community College, next to the Visitor Center, 15 miles east of Culpeper on Route 3, the Germanna Highway. The Barbecue on Friday evening, July 18, will be held at Salubria, 7 miles east of Germanna on Rt. 3. The Annual Banquet and Auction Saturday evening, July 19, will be held on the lawn of Salubria, on Route 3, Stevensburg, Va. Stevensburg is between the Visitors Center and Culpeper. Due to the heat last summer we will have large circulating fans installed near the Banquet Tent for your comfort. We will also have lighting and free valet parking at Salubria.

Greetings from Siegen, Roll Call of the
Families, General Announcements.
Featured Speaker this year is Dr. William Kelso, principal archaeologist at
Jamestown. For the last 14 years Bill Kelso has been in charge of the dig at
Jamestown. His work was the focal point of the 400th Anniversary celebration
in 2007. His new book Buried Truth
chronicles both his work at Jamestown and the lives of the
17th century Jamestown settlers. The result of his work is a new take on the
truth that was Jamestown. His book will be available for sale and he will
autograph them after the talk.
Lunch will be served following the program. Lunch this year will be Fried
Chicken, baked Virginia Ham, delightful salads, rolls, drinks and
desert.
Following the annual picnic lunch we will conduct a general membership meeting where
the new plans for the organization will be explained fully by the advisory
board of the new Germanna Association. Important changes are in the
wind, so don't miss this Annual General Meeting.
After lunch we will meet at the Visitor
Center for the dedication of the New Paving Stones in the
Garden. These stones were donated by members and all proceeds go to the final
phase of the Memorial Garden, the future arbor which will surround the
Memorial Garden. We will also recognize
those individuals who have made contributions to the Library and Visitors
Center this year.
Evelyn C. Martin Library will be
open all weekend for research and study. Please bring your genealogy to add to
the collection.
