The Orange County Historical Society announces that the first in its series of illustrated lectures on the history of the county will be postponed from Saturday, February 6, to Saturday, February 13. The hope is that we will break out of the weekend storm cycle we've been in for most of the winter and that the lecture schedule will only have to be moved up by one week.
Admission is free, and the public is invited to come to duPont Hall at Grymes Memorial School at 10:00 a.m. on February 13 to hear, among other things, why Orange County's original western border was the Mississippi River, how Lord Fairfax came to own 5,282,000 acres of land, and what is the source of he county's name. (No, it's not the dirt.)
BACKGROUND: Grymes Memorial School is located on Route 633 (Spicer's Mill Road) approximately two miles from its intersection in the Town of Orange with Madison Road (Route 15; "the Sheetz corner"). The address is 13775 Spicers Mill Road. Admission is free, ample parking is available, and the entrance to duPont Hall will be marked. Coffee and cookies and talk handouts will be available.
The Historical Society sincerely appreciates Grymes School making its facilities available for the entire series of talks. In addition, each talk will be hosted by a local organization that will be responsible for setting out chairs, fixing coffee, etc., and the Society also wishes to thank them for their assistance and support.
The revised schedule for the talks to be presented during the Saturday series is now:
February 13 -- Beginnings for a County and a Court House Town (Hosted by The Orange County Department of Tourism).
February 20 -- Before the Beginning; the Land and its People (Hosted by the Orange County Historical Society).
February 27 -- James Madison, his life, his wife, his house, and his Constitution (Hosted by the James Madison Museum).
March 6 -- The Civil War: Much Too Close for Comfort (Hosted by the Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum).
March 13 -- The Commerce of a County (Hosted by the Orange County Chamber of Commerce).
