Governor McDonnell is seeking over 4,000 individuals to serve on the Commonwealth of Virginia's boards and commissions. All qualified and service-minded Virginians are encouraged to participate in the government of our Commonwealth by offering to serve on a board or commission, or by recommending qualified candidates. Many of the members of the Germanna Foundation have had a 300-year head start on being acquainted with Virginia's needs, and would make excellent candidates. The deadline for submitting your resume and responding to some on-line questions is April 22, 2010.

Come see the National Capitol Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force at the Regional Airport in Brandy Station, 12499 Beverly Ford Rd., Brandy Station. The National Capitol Squadron and Museum will be open and visitors can enjoy tours, explore aircraft and watch a WWII reenactment. Visit the hangar/museum building equipped for the maintenance and display of a fleet of aircraft known as the Ghost Squadron. A WWII Reconnaissance Fighting Vehicle known as a Ferret, and a YAK 7B WWII fighter will also be on display. War Bird rides will be for sale.

In place of the traditional 11:00 am service, Reverend William E. Eberle will be officiating an authentic 18th century service in period dress. May 1 is observed as Loyalty Day in the United States. It is a day set aside for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom. By an Act of Congress, Loyalty Day was made an official holiday on July 18, 1958 (Public Law 85-529).

In a rare public appearance, literary legend, essayist, poet and Kentucky farmer Wendell Berry discusses his life's work and vision of people honoring and reconnecting with the soil.

He writes powerfully about the importance of place, and how the land interacts with the people on it. Berry is a good author to study on how to communicate the importance of the Germanna Foundation's stewardship of Siegen Forest, Salubria, and the Peter Hitt cemetery.

The German Embassy (4645 Reservoir Rd. NW, Washington, DC 20007) is hosting an open house on Saturday, May 8, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM to celebrate the EU theme "Green Europe: Good for the Economy, Good for the Environment."

From the "Moonbounce" to facepainting and more, there will be plenty of activities for kids to enjoy, and plenty for parents as well.

Have a delicious light lunch and then sample German fare from local businesses. Expect classic favorites from Bratwurst to Döner. A portion of proceeds from food sales will go to charity.

Come see a reenactment of the Raid at Martin's Station, complete with frontier colonials and Cherokee warriors. Learn about Daniel Boone's role in clearing the nearby Wilderness Road. At 10AM on May 8, join members of the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the Virginia Sons of the American Revolution for a wreath-laying.
